2011 Update by Mercy Bass

In two months I will be flying to New Zealand for my final race as an under 17. Looking back on my final year as a junior, I’m really proud of it.

The road season started out with the Sizzling Summer Series, this event went over three weekends, with a crit each week. I was so excited about it because criteriums are my absolute favourite race. It was tough racing, as we rode with the B and C grade women, though overall I was very happy with my results, after finishing with two seconds, one first and taking out the overall series winner.

Another race that I really enjoyed was the Mt Cotton Kermesse at Mt Cotton Driver Training Centre. On the day of the race it was pouring, and the course had some pretty steep cornering so it was guaranteed to be an interesting race. Overall it was a really good day and everyone rode safely. I was really happy with my ride after coming first place.

From there, the Hit Racing Team and I had many other events this season which everyone raced exceptionally in. A few of my favourites were the Battle of the Border, the Metros and the Balmoral Junior Tour.

Most recently, I had the Junior Queensland State titles, which was held in Clifton. The weekend of racing was really great and the Hitachi Team all did really well. The time trial course was long, flat and amazingly windy, making it one of the toughest races of the weekend. I was really happy after placing 3rd. The road course was very similar to the time trial course. I really loved it, and for the last 20 km of the race I was in a breakaway with three other girls, in the end I placed forth. In the crit I was again in the breakaway of four, though with 3 laps to go I got a flat, and because it was so late in the race I lost my place and had to catch up myself, but again, with 2 laps to go I got another flat. I finished the race pretty disappointed but knowing I did my best and overall had a good weekend.

Coming up is the State Team Time trails; I’m in a team with Jess and Hitachi rider, Hayley. Also in October I’m going to New Zealand for the Yunca Tour, which I am really looking forward too.

2011 Update by Yannik Frank

What were you doing at 7 o’clock in the morning on 3 rd of April? Maybe you were having your warm morning coffee, all warm and cuddled up. You sure weren’t down at the Mt Buffalo National Hill climb champs. Oh well, despite coming only 12 th and 14th in 2 degree Celsius conditions, it was still a great experience. Trust me, 22km’s have never felt harder when you reach the top accompanied by cheering spectators. I was the only member of the Hit Team to compete that day…

Since I started on the Hit Team not long ago two events that have stood out for me were the Junior Track Cycling Nationals and the States. They were the, “Make or Break” events for me. Comparing Nationals to States now, it seems as if States were a no bigger event than Tuesday Night Racing. I think a couple of us took it too seriously, for example me. With me just scraping through into the team (I was sick as usual), this years Track QLD team is the best. Several of Hit Team members were selected, including Doug, Hayley, Jack R. and I. Although not in Hit, but also club members, Jack Leigh and Mitchell Gale were also selected. I believe that it is safe to say that Balmoral dominated the States! Special thanks to Tony Torr of Balmoral for helping.

Nationals went all according to plan I think (apart from breaking my wrist… I still rode my Pursuit in a PB!), with every one smashing PB’s, and some even picking up medals! 4 Hit riders representing Qld at Nat’s is an immense effort.

Before Nationals and all that, though, another popular event, Creastmead (Sizzling Summer Series) was dominated by Hitachi with some fantastic results. Leading onto the next event, the Australasian School Cycling Cup, in which Doug and I competed. Doug performed superiorly in Track (for the first time in SCC). It was simply his Day. His name was repeated over the loud speaker so many times I think I must’ve lost count, and after an interview, he concluded the day as being crowned Overall winner in the U17 boys. He also competed in the Road Race, ITT and Hill-climb. Whereas I might have had a bit of a downer on the first day (track) I was exceedingly happy with my performance in the RR and Hill Climb. At Dookie- Shepparton, 46km’s of high-paced, intense, hilly racing, is great fun, except when you come flying round the final corner (covered in gravel, sand, bumps, cracks etc.), that was when I decided to not take any risks, but still ended up coming 6 th. Let alone keeping up made me happy, but a 5 th in the Hill climb was a great conclusion. With the knowledge that this course will be the National RR course for Doug and I, we are looking forward to them

One of the more recent events is the Anzac Day Race. Once again… Hitachi went extremely well. Doug came 3 rd after a harsh sprint between James Thompson and Owen Gillet, I myself placed second, with a 30m lead over the line behind Jackson Carman who also had broken away and had already crossed the line 1 minute in front. Saving the best result till last, Hayley won her U17F race being one of the stronger riders, as well as Mercy Bass coming in third .
